Publix Jobs 2026: Store Roles, Employee Ownership and How to Apply

October 18, 2026

Publix jobs come with an unusual feature: Publix is the largest employee-owned company in the U.S., with more than 260,000 employees at the end of 2025. In 2026 the chain, based in Lakeland, Florida, keeps hiring for its stores, pharmacies, distribution centers and manufacturing plants across the Southeast.

Publix ended 2025 with 1,432 supermarkets in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Kentucky, and 33 more were under construction. It opened 52 stores during 2025, including 13 replacements, and remodeled 89 more. Each new store needs a full team, from front service to the deli counter.

Publix takes applications through its official jobs website, which links to separate applications for store and non-store roles. Use the button below to see Publix openings and apply on the company’s site.

Why people want Publix jobs

Ownership is the headline. Publix provides company stock to eligible employees through a noncontributory Employee Stock Ownership Plan, and the shares held by the plan were worth $13.9 billion at the end of 2025, according to its annual report.

Promotion from within is the other big draw. Publix says almost all of its employees in leadership positions began their careers there in entry-level jobs, and on-the-job training plays a central role in how they move up. The company also runs two Publix Serves volunteer weeks a year, and in each week of 2025 more than 7,000 employees helped at nearly 150 nonprofit organizations.

Publix departments and common roles

The Publix jobs site organizes openings into retail stores, pharmacy, distribution, manufacturing, industrial maintenance, Publix Technology and corporate careers. Most hiring happens in the stores, which run departments such as deli, bakery, meat, seafood, produce and floral.

Department Where Examples of the work
Retail stores Supermarkets Front service, stocking, deli, bakery, meat, seafood and produce
Pharmacy In-store pharmacies Pharmacy technician and pharmacist roles
Distribution Distribution centers Warehouse and transportation work that supplies the stores
Manufacturing Publix plants Producing private label items sold in Publix stores
Industrial maintenance Plants and warehouses Keeping equipment and facilities running
Publix Technology and corporate Offices Technology, finance, human resources and other support roles

Distribution is a big part of the operation. Merchandise reaches the stores through company distribution centers or directly from suppliers, and about 67% of product costs flow through the distribution centers, according to the annual report. That is why the distribution department hires for warehouse and transportation roles, not only the stores.

What Publix looks for in applicants

Requirements vary by department and are shown in each posting. Store roles center on customer service, and the company’s long-running motto, where shopping is a pleasure, sums up the service standard expected on the sales floor.

Pharmacy, maintenance and technology positions list specific credentials or experience. Check the minimum age, availability and physical requirements in the posting before you apply.

How to apply for Publix jobs step by step

  1. Visit the Publix jobs website and choose a department or open Job Search.
  2. For store jobs, use the retail store job application linked from the site.
  3. For distribution, manufacturing, technology and corporate roles, search the posted openings and apply online.
  4. Create your login and complete every section of the application.
  5. Returning applicants can sign in through the Retail Applicant Login to review or update a store application.

Keep your login details somewhere safe, because you will use them to check or update your application. Apply only through the links on the official jobs site, not through copies posted elsewhere.

Publix hiring process

The steps depend on the department, and the posting or the store explains what comes next. For most store jobs the general path looks like this.

Stage What it involves
Application Store application or online application for non-store roles
Review The store or hiring team reviews availability and experience
Interview Arranged by the store or department if you are selected
Offer Position, schedule and pay for that location
Training On-the-job training in your department

Publix benefits

Publix’s annual report describes several plans for eligible employees. In 2025, 2024 and 2023 its board approved a 401(k) match of 50% of eligible contributions up to 3% of eligible pay, with a maximum match of $750 per employee.

  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan, funded by the company
  • Employee Stock Purchase Plan for current employees
  • 401(k) plan with a board-approved match
  • Tuition reimbursement for eligible employees
  • Training and leadership development programs

Publix pay: what to know

Publix does not publish a company-wide average or starting wage in its annual report. Pay depends on the department, the position, the store and your experience.

Ask about the hourly rate and the schedule for raises when you receive an offer. Stock ownership through the ESOP is a separate benefit for eligible employees, so ask how and when you would become eligible. Because Publix stock is not traded on a public exchange, its value is set by the board using an independent valuation, as the annual report explains.

Where Publix has the most openings

Store jobs follow the store count, and Florida dominates. This was Publix’s store footprint at the end of 2025.

State Stores at end of 2025 Under construction
Florida 889 19
Georgia 220 0
Alabama 96 1
South Carolina 75 1
North Carolina 61 5
Tennessee 61 1
Virginia 24 0
Kentucky 6 6

Florida has 889 of the 1,432 stores, so most store openings are there. Kentucky is the newest market, growing from 1 store to 6 during 2025, with 6 more under construction.

Resume and interview tips for Publix applicants

Customer service is the core of the job, so highlight any experience serving customers, even from school events or volunteer work. For deli, bakery or meat roles, mention food handling or kitchen experience.

In the interview, give short examples of helping a customer or working well on a team. Showing that you know the store and its departments tells the manager you took the application seriously. If you are applying to a new store that is about to open, mention that you can start on the opening schedule.

Common mistakes when applying to Publix

A frequent mistake is using the wrong application. Store jobs and non-store jobs have separate applications on the Publix site, so pick the one that matches the role. Corporate and support openings run on a separate careers platform linked from the same page.

Another is leaving parts of the application blank, especially availability. A complete application with realistic hours gives the store what it needs to schedule an interview.

How to spot fake Publix job offers

Publix applications start on its official jobs website, which links to the store application and to openings for other departments. Be wary of offers by text or social media that skip the application or ask you to continue on a chat app.

Never pay to apply, to train or to start a job, and do not share bank details before you have a real offer. If a listing looks odd, check the official Publix jobs site before replying.
