Hotel housekeeping jobs are a steady way into Canada’s tourism industry in 2026. Hotels, motels, resorts and lodges need room attendants every day of the year, and most train new staff on the job. This guide covers the duties, pay by province and region according to Job Bank, shifts, staff housing rules, your rights and how to apply.

On October 23, 2026, a Job Bank search for “room attendant” returned 153 postings outside Quebec, mostly in British Columbia (55), Alberta (36) and Ontario (32). Demand is strongest in resort areas and big cities, and the work suits people who are organized, like physical work and take pride in a room done right.
We are not a hotel or an agency, and we do not take applications. The button below opens Job Bank, the Government of Canada’s job board, with current room attendant postings. You apply directly with each employer, and applying is free.
What room attendants do
A room attendant cleans and resets guest rooms to the hotel’s standard. You usually get a list of rooms at the start of the shift, split between check-outs, which need a full clean, and stay-overs, which need a lighter service.
- Strip and make beds, and change towels and linens.
- Clean bathrooms, dust, vacuum and empty bins.
- Restock amenities, coffee and supplies from your cart.
- Report damage, maintenance problems and lost items.
- Respect guest privacy and follow security rules for keys and rooms.
Larger hotels also hire housepersons, who move linen and supplies, and public area attendants, who clean lobbies, gyms and corridors.
What hotels look for
Most housekeeping jobs ask for no diploma and no previous experience. Employers look for reliability, attention to detail, basic English and the stamina to push a cart, lift mattresses and bend many times a shift.
You need the legal right to work in Canada and, once hired, a Social Insurance Number. Some hotels ask for weekend availability, a background check because you handle room keys, or comfortable non-slip shoes. Resort employers may also prefer people who can stay for the full season.

Housekeeping jobs pay by province
Job Bank groups room attendants with light duty cleaners (NOC 65310). The figures are medians for all workers in that occupation, so they include hotel, office and hospital cleaning. Each posting shows the real rate for that job.

Where room attendants earn more: regional medians
Pay varies inside each province. Resort towns and high-cost cities tend to have higher medians, but housing costs there are higher too.

| Lower Mainland–Southwest Region, B.C. | 21.91 |

Hours, shifts and seasons
Most housekeeping shifts run during the day, after guests check out, and weekends are the busiest days. Hotels often schedule more hours in summer and around holidays, and fewer in slow months, so ask how hours change through the year.
Ski and mountain resorts hire for winter, and lake and coastal resorts for summer. In Ontario, if you usually work more than three hours a day and are sent home after less than three hours, your employer must generally pay you for at least three hours.
Staff housing and meals at resorts
Many resorts offer staff housing, and the cost is often taken from your pay. Some provinces limit how much room and meals can count against the minimum wage.
| Province | Room | Meals |
|---|---|---|
| Ontario | $31.70 a week (private) or $15.85 (non-private) | $2.55 a meal, up to $53.55 a week |
| Alberta | Up to $4.41 per day’s lodging | Up to $3.35 per meal eaten |
Sources: Ontario Employment Standards Act guide and Alberta minimum wage rules. In Ontario, these amounts only count if you actually used the room and ate the meals. In other provinces, ask for the housing cost in writing and check with your employment standards office.
How to apply for housekeeping jobs, step by step
- Open Job Bank with the button on this page and search “room attendant” or “housekeeping” with your city, postal code or resort town.
- Read each posting for shift times, weekend work, start and end dates, and whether staff housing is offered.
- Check the hotel’s own careers page to confirm the job and the way to apply.
- Prepare a short résumé that shows cleaning, hospitality, caregiving or any detail-focused work.
- Apply through the employer’s site or the method in the posting, and note the date.
- Prepare for a short interview and, in some hotels, a practical test of making a bed or cleaning a bathroom.
- Before you accept, ask for the hourly rate, expected hours and any housing deductions in writing.
Training, certificates and costs
Hotels train new room attendants on their own standards, and in Ontario employers must make sure workers are trained on hazardous products before using them. You can also build skills on your own.
- Emerit Housekeeping Room Attendant e-learning: based on the national occupational standard, about 8.5 hours, $125 through provincial tourism training bodies such as Tourism Saskatchewan and go2HR in B.C.
- WHMIS for Workers: an e-course from the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety for $19.95.
To move into supervision or front desk roles, college hospitality programs are an option. In B.C., the StrongerBC future skills grant covers up to $3,500 for eligible short-term training at public post-secondary institutions. In Ontario, Better Jobs Ontario can fund up to $28,000 for training of one year or less for eligible laid-off workers. Part-time students outside the Northwest Territories and Nunavut can apply for the Canada Student Grant for Part-Time Students, up to $2,520 per school year.
Your rights in housekeeping jobs
Room attendants are covered by their province’s employment standards. Your pay can never be below the minimum wage, which is $17.95 in Ontario, $18.25 in B.C. and $15.00 in Alberta as of October 23, 2026.
- Overtime: after 44 hours a week in Ontario, after 8 hours a day or 40 a week in B.C., and after 8 hours a day or 44 a week in Alberta, whichever is greater.
- Tips: in Ontario, an employer generally cannot keep, deduct from or make you return tips, for example to cover breakage or damage.
- Written terms: in Ontario, employers with 25 or more employees must give new staff written information on pay, pay day and hours before the first day.
- Probation: termination notice or pay generally starts after three months in Ontario and B.C., and after 90 days in Alberta.
Since January 1, 2026, Ontario employers with 25 or more employees must state the expected pay or pay range in public job postings and tell interviewed applicants whether a decision has been made within 45 days.
Résumé and interview tips
Lead with any cleaning, hospitality, childcare or caregiving experience, even if it was unpaid. Add the words employers search for: attention to detail, time management, guest privacy and teamwork.
In the interview, explain how you organize a room so nothing is missed. Ask how many rooms make up a normal shift, how the hotel handles heavy workloads and what safety equipment is provided.
Common mistakes
- Accepting resort work without knowing the housing cost and contract end date.
- Not asking how hours drop in the slow season.
- Rushing rooms and missing items that inspectors check.
- Lifting mattresses alone or mixing cleaning chemicals.
- Applying through unofficial sites instead of the hotel’s own page.
How to spot hotel job scams
Fake hotel postings often promise high pay with free housing and ask you to act fast. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre warns about job offers you did not apply for, web-based email addresses and requests for upfront deposits.
- Never pay for a uniform, training, housing deposit or work permit help to get a job.
- Never send your SIN, passport or bank details by text, WhatsApp or social media before a real written offer. The Government of Canada says your SIN is only required after hiring.
- Call the hotel’s main number, found on its official site, to confirm the job exists.
Report fraud to your bank, local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
