PSW jobs are posted across Canada in 2026, and you can qualify with a certificate that takes months, not years. This guide covers what personal support workers (PSWs) do, the pay Job Bank reports in each province and territory, what training costs, and the registries in Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta.

Demand comes from long-term care homes, home care agencies, retirement homes, hospitals and community programs. When we checked Job Bank on 23 October 2026, a search for “personal support worker” returned more than 300 postings. The work suits people who are patient, steady under pressure and comfortable helping others with very personal tasks.
To see current openings, use the button below. It takes you to Job Bank, the Government of Canada’s job board, where each posting tells you how to apply directly with the employer. We don’t place people in jobs and we don’t take applications.
What a PSW does day to day
A PSW helps people who need support with daily living, under the direction of nurses or a care plan. The job title changes by province. Ontario uses “personal support worker”, British Columbia uses “health care assistant” and Alberta uses “health care aide”, but the core work is similar.
- Helping with bathing, dressing, grooming and toileting
- Helping people move, transfer and reposition safely
- Serving meals and helping with eating and drinking
- Noticing changes in health or mood and reporting them to the nurse
- Keeping simple care notes
- Light housekeeping and errands, mostly in home care
- Offering company and conversation, which matters more than many expect
In a long-term care home you work with a team on one unit. In home care you visit clients one after another, often alone, so time management and travel become part of the job.
Requirements for PSW jobs
Most employers want a completed PSW, health care assistant or health care aide program. Postings also commonly ask for CPR and first aid, a police check with a vulnerable sector search, and proof of immunizations. Home care agencies often list a driver’s licence and access to a vehicle.
Each province adds its own layer:
Anúncios
- Ontario: registration with the Health and Supportive Care Providers Oversight Authority (HSCPOA) opened on 1 December 2024 and is voluntary, according to HSCPOA.
- British Columbia: health care assistants register with the BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry, which recognizes the HCA programs that follow the provincial curriculum. Health authority programs such as HCAP require registration after you graduate.
- Alberta: since 2 February 2026, anyone working as a health care aide must be registered and hold a valid practice permit with the College of LPNs and HCAs of Alberta (CLHA), which replaced the old HCA Directory.

Hours and shifts
Care homes and hospitals run around the clock, so PSW schedules include days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. Many positions are part-time or casual at first, and full-time lines often go to staff with seniority.
Home care looks different. You may work split shifts, with busy mornings and evenings and a gap in the middle of the day. Ask how travel time between clients and mileage are handled before you accept.
How to apply for PSW jobs, step by step
- Pick a setting: long-term care, home care, retirement home or hospital.
- Check your province’s rule: a recognized program in Ontario, the BC registry, or CLHA registration in Alberta.
- Gather your certificate, CPR card, police check and immunization record in one folder.
- Use the button on this page to search Job Bank and filter by city.
- Read each posting for the employer’s name, wage, hours and setting.
- Apply the way the posting says, usually on the employer’s own website.
- Prepare two work or placement references before the interview.
Training, certificates and what they cost
PSW and HCA programs are offered by public colleges, school boards and private career colleges. Costs vary widely, so compare at least three schools. Here are published examples from public colleges.
| Province | Example program | Length | Published cost (domestic) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ontario | Canadore College, PSW Ontario College Certificate | Two semesters | $4,993.91 total for 2026–27, North Bay campus |
| British Columbia | Okanagan College, Health Care Assistant Certificate | 24 instructional weeks | About $4,190 estimated (Kelowna, Penticton, Salmon Arm) |
| Alberta | NorQuest College, Health Care Aide | 8 months full-time (12 months evenings) | $9,360.65 estimated, January 2027 start |
In Alberta, new graduates must also pass the Alberta HCA Registration Examination to join the CLHA register. The CLHA lists a $250 annual permit renewal due by 30 November, and HCAs must carry malpractice liability insurance.
Funding in force in 2026
- PSW District School Board Bursary (Ontario): announced in August 2026 with $18 million over three years. Eligible students in school board PSW programs can receive up to $2,000, according to CESBA, which runs it.
- Health Career Access Program (BC): you are hired as a health care support worker, the Province pays your HCA tuition and a stipend, and you commit to 12 months of work as an HCA afterwards.
- Better Jobs Ontario: up to $28,000 for training of one year or less, plus a living allowance of up to $500 a week. It is for people who were laid off, or who have been unemployed for 12 weeks or longer and live in a low-income household.
- Canada Student Grant for Part-Time Students: up to $2,520 per school year until the end of 2026–27, based on financial need. You apply through your province’s student aid.
Already a PSW? Ontario’s Bridging Education Grant in Nursing (BEGIN) helps PSWs train as practical nurses in exchange for a work commitment.
Your rights at work
Most PSW jobs fall under provincial employment standards. The general minimum wage is $17.95 an hour in Ontario since 1 October 2026, $18.25 in British Columbia since 1 June 2026 and $15 in Alberta.
- Overtime: in Ontario after 44 hours a week; in BC after 8 hours a day or 40 a week; in Alberta after 8 hours a day or 44 a week. The usual rate is 1.5 times your regular pay.
- Written terms: since 1 July 2025, Ontario employers with 25 or more employees must give new hires their pay, pay day, hours and work location in writing, before the first day where practicable.
- Probation: in Ontario, the right to termination notice starts after three months of employment. A collective agreement may give you more.
In other provinces and territories, check your local employment standards office for the current rules.
Résumé and interview tips
Put your certificate, registry status and CPR expiry date near the top. List clinical placement hours and the settings you worked in, such as dementia care or palliative care.
Interviewers often ask how you would handle a resident who refuses care, or what you would do if you saw a fall. Answer with real examples from placement, focusing on safety, dignity and reporting to the nurse.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Enrolling in a program without checking that it’s recognized in your province.
- Letting CPR or a police check expire while you apply.
- Accepting a home care job without asking about mileage and travel time.
- Not asking whether the position is full-time, part-time or casual.
How to spot job scams
Real employers never charge you to apply, to get hired or to “reserve” a shift. Never send your SIN, passport or banking details by text, WhatsApp or social media before you have a real written offer from an employer you can verify.
Be wary of messages that offer a high wage without an interview, or ask you to pay for a “mandatory” course from an unknown company. Check the school with your province, and check the employer’s name and website yourself.
