Why people choose to work at Sobeys

Sobeys has been in food retail since 1907, when it started as a meat-delivery business in Stellarton, Nova Scotia. Today it works in more than 930 communities, so there are openings in large cities and in small towns where the local grocery store is a major employer.

The company also points out that for a lot of people, their first shift at Sobeys is their first job. New teammates get onboarding and customer service training, plus access to a range of online courses.

Sobeys banners and where they operate

When you search Sobeys jobs, you can filter by banner. Each banner has its own regional footprint, which helps you narrow your search.

Banner Main regions (as described by Sobeys)
Sobeys More than 255 locations in Atlantic Canada, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta
Safeway 183 stores from Vancouver to Thunder Bay
FreshCo and Chalo! FreshCo More than 123 stores in Alberta, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and British Columbia
IGA More than 270 independent affiliated grocers, mainly in Quebec
Foodland and Co-op More than 130 Ontario and 80 Atlantic communities
Thrifty Foods 26 stores on Vancouver Island, Salt Spring Island and the Lower Mainland
Lawtons Drugs 76 pharmacies in Atlantic Canada

Most common Sobeys jobs

The careers site groups openings into seven categories: Retail, Pharmacy, Supply Chain, Production, Office, Franchise Opportunities and E-Commerce. On October 18, 2026, the search page listed 1,139 postings.

Pharmacy Pharmacy assistant, technician, pharmacist
Supply Chain Warehouse and distribution centre roles that supply more than 1,600 stores
E-Commerce Voilà roles in automated warehouses, delivery and curbside pickup

Recent examples on the site include a part-time replenishment teammate in New Minas, Nova Scotia, meat and deli clerks in Edmonton, a cake decorator in Dartmouth and a bakery clerk at Thrifty Foods in Saanichton, British Columbia. Produce and floral clerks in Calgary and deli staff at Safeway in Winnipeg were also listed. The mix changes daily, so it is worth setting up a job alert.

Requirements for store and warehouse roles

Each posting lists its own requirements. Sobeys states that the minimum age varies by role and province, so check the posting before you apply.

Store roles focus on customer service, teamwork and availability. Fresh departments may ask for food handling knowledge, pharmacy roles need the right provincial registration, and supply chain jobs involve physical work in a warehouse environment. Office roles list education and experience requirements in each posting.

How to apply for Sobeys jobs step by step

  1. Go to jobs.sobeyscareers.com, the official Sobeys careers site.
  2. Pick a category or type a job title in the search bar.
  3. Filter by banner, language (English or French) and distance from your location.
  4. Open the posting and read the store, schedule and requirements.
  5. Create an account when you apply, which lets you track your application and set up job alerts.
  6. Submit the application online. Sobeys notes that some locations may also accept in-person applications for specific roles.

The Sobeys hiring process

Sobeys describes a simple three-step process on its careers site. Timelines vary by store and role, but the stages are the same.

  • Apply online for the role you want.
  • Interview, either by phone or in person.
  • Background check, if the role requires one, before the final offer and start date.

The company also offers accommodation support during hiring. If you need an adjustment for an interview or assessment, ask the recruiter early.

What Sobeys offers

On its “Working with us” page, Sobeys mentions an employee discount and purchase programs, competitive pay and benefits, and benefits for eligible employees. It also highlights flexible schedules, including part-time roles, and programs that adapt to employees’ priorities.

Training is a recurring theme: onboarding for first-time workers, online courses, and development programs for future leaders. Exact benefits depend on your role, hours and whether the store is corporate or franchised.

Sobeys pay: what to expect

Sobeys does not publish a general wage scale, so this guide does not quote a figure. Pay depends on the province, the banner, the department, your hours and, in unionized stores, the collective agreement that applies.

Many IGA, Foodland and franchise stores are owned by independent operators who set their own conditions. Read the posting carefully and ask about pay and hours during the interview.

Where Sobeys is hiring

Because the network covers all 10 provinces, openings appear almost everywhere. Atlantic Canada has a strong Sobeys and Lawtons presence, Quebec is served mainly through IGA grocers, and Western Canada adds Safeway, FreshCo and Thrifty Foods to the Sobeys stores. Ontario mixes Sobeys, FreshCo, Foodland and the Voilà warehouses.

Supply chain and Voilà roles are more concentrated, since they depend on where distribution centres and automated warehouses are located. Use the distance filter on the careers site, which starts at 50 kilometres, and widen it if you can commute further.

Resume and interview tips

Put your availability, languages and any customer service experience at the top of your resume. If you speak French, say so, since many postings can be filtered by language.

For the interview, prepare short examples about teamwork, handling a busy period and keeping a work area clean and safe. Ask which department you would join, what a typical shift looks like and how training works in your first weeks. Sobeys says it values customer focus and respect, so examples that show both will help.

Common mistakes when applying

  • Applying through copied postings on unofficial sites instead of the Sobeys careers site.
  • Forgetting to create an account, which makes it harder to track your status.
  • Choosing a banner or distance filter that hides nearby stores.
  • Not checking spam folders for messages from recruiters.
  • Leaving availability blank or vague, when weekend and evening coverage is often what a store needs most.
  • Sending the same resume for a pharmacy, bakery and warehouse role without adjusting the experience you highlight.

How to spot fake Sobeys job offers

Sobeys warns that fake career websites and copied job postings using its name have appeared, and that these are not affiliated with the company. It states that all of its current opportunities can be found on its own careers site.

You never have to pay to apply. Be wary of anyone who asks for money, gift cards or banking details, or who offers a job through a chat app without an interview.
