Tesco jobs in 2026 cover everything from a few hours a week at an Express shop to night shifts in a distribution centre. On 2 October 2026 Tesco announced it was recruiting more than 28,000 temporary colleagues across the UK for Christmas, on top of its usual year-round vacancies.

Tesco’s 2026 annual report puts the average workforce in the UK and Republic of Ireland at almost 300,000 people in 2025/26, working across 2,967 Tesco stores in the UK, 714 company-owned One Stop shops and 21 distribution centres. Most entry-level roles are store colleagues, online grocery pickers, delivery drivers and warehouse operatives.

Why Tesco jobs are worth considering in 2026
With thousands of stores across the UK, Tesco offers a wide choice of locations, contract lengths and shift patterns. Its careers site points out that it has more colleagues in the UK than anywhere else in the world, which means more choice when looking for roles and progression.
Hourly pay is negotiated with the shopworkers’ union Usdaw, which has a collective bargaining agreement with Tesco. The 2026 deal raised the hourly rate for store colleagues to £13.28 from 29 March 2026, an increase of 5.1%.
The most common roles at Tesco
These are the entry-level roles that appear most often in the Tesco Careers job search. The exact duties and hours are always set out in each advert.
| Role | Where | Typical tasks |
|---|---|---|
| Tesco Colleague | Express, Superstore and Extra stores | Serving customers, filling shelves, checkouts and keeping the store tidy |
| Festive Colleague | Mainly Superstores and Extra stores | Temporary Christmas work serving customers or picking Grocery Home Delivery orders |
| Customer Service Assistant | One Stop shops | Tills, deliveries and shop floor work in a convenience store |
| Customer Delivery Driver | Stores with online grocery services | Delivering online orders to customers’ homes in a Tesco van |
| Warehouse Operative | Distribution centres | Picking and loading stock for stores on day, night or fixed shifts |
| Café and pharmacy colleagues | Larger stores | Serving food and drinks, or supporting the pharmacy counter |
Requirements for entry-level roles
Tesco’s FAQ says you need to be of school leaving age to work for the company, although some adverts ask for applicants aged 18 or over. Its stores page says no specific qualifications are needed for in-store roles, and that any required level of experience will be stated in the job description.
Anúncios
For Christmas roles, Tesco says no experience is necessary and a CV is not required. Every UK applicant needs to prove the right to work before receiving an offer; for store roles this is done online before the interview, and you bring the same documents with you.
How to apply for Tesco jobs step by step
The application is handled entirely online, and Tesco does not accept applications sent by email. You can apply for more than one role at a time if you have no preference of store.
- Open the Tesco Careers job search and filter by location, radius and business area such as Tesco, One Stop or Booker.
- Read the advert, including hours, contract type and any skills the role needs.
- Create a Tesco Careers profile. You may be able to apply with LinkedIn, Indeed or a CV.
- Complete the application form and note which days you can work, as availability is one of the questions.
- Complete any online assessment you are sent, such as a scenario-based exercise for store roles.
- Use the link you receive to book your interview, then track progress by logging back into your account.
The Tesco selection process
For retail, warehouse and distribution roles, Tesco describes a short process with an in-person interview. Office and technology roles follow a longer process.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Online application | Profile, application form and availability |
| Online assessment (some roles) | A scenario-based exercise or online chat assessment for store roles |
| Right to work check | Completed online before the interview for store roles |
| Interview | A 30-minute in-person conversation based on Tesco’s “Win Together” behaviours |
| Decision and checks | An email if you are successful, feedback if not, then employment checks and onboarding |
Tesco says that for roles in stores and distribution centres it can take up to five weeks to review an application, depending on how many it receives. You can track the status by logging back into your account, and updates are also sent by email.
Tesco pay in 2026
The current hourly rates for store colleagues came into effect on 29 March 2026 under the agreement with Usdaw. Tesco’s festive jobs page quotes the same rates for Christmas roles.
| Item | Rate |
|---|---|
| Store colleague, outside the M25 | £13.28 per hour |
| Store colleague, inside the M25 | £14.55 per hour |
| Night premium on festive roles | An additional £2.35 per hour |
Driver and warehouse roles have their own rates, which are shown in each advert. Check the advert for the exact rate, contracted hours and any shift premiums before you apply.
Benefits Tesco offers colleagues
Permanent colleagues receive a Tesco Colleague Clubcard after four weeks, with colleague discounts in store and online, and can request a card for a family member. The pension scheme matches contributions up to 7.5%, and there is life assurance at five times salary.
The benefits page also lists an Employee Assistance Programme with a free 24/7 virtual GP, 20% off F&F clothing, 10% off at One Stop and Tesco Mobile, a Save As You Earn share scheme and lifestyle breaks of up to 12 months. Tesco notes that benefits vary by role.
Christmas jobs at Tesco in 2026
The festive roles are mainly in Superstores and Extra stores, with shifts across the day including early mornings and evenings, plus a small number of picking roles at distribution centres. Tesco says temporary colleagues may be able to move into permanent jobs after Christmas where positions become available.
Where Tesco is hiring
Store vacancies appear across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. In mid-October 2026 the job search listed roles such as festive colleagues at Exeter Vale Extra, Express colleagues in Bournemouth and Crewe, and a One Stop shift leader in Risca, south Wales.
Warehouse jobs are based at the 21 distribution centres, which Tesco says stretch from Middlesbrough to Milton Keynes and include large sites at Daventry and Goole. Tesco says its Goole site alone delivers to 2,500 stores.
CV and interview tips
Tesco recommends reading the advert carefully, tailoring your CV where one is required and keeping it concise, ideally to two pages. Use examples from work, volunteering, school or hobbies that show the difference you made.
Interview questions are based on the “Win Together” behaviours, and Tesco suggests the STAR method: situation, task, action, result. It recommends smart-casual clothing for the interview.
Common mistakes when applying
The mistakes that slow people down are sending a CV by email, leaving the availability question vague and forgetting the right to work documents on the day. Tesco’s FAQ also explains that minimum criteria are checked automatically, so applying for a role whose requirements you do not meet, such as an 18-plus advert, can end the application before you finish it.
How to spot fake Tesco job offers
Genuine Tesco vacancies are listed on the official Tesco Careers job search, and every application goes through a Tesco Careers profile. Be careful with messages on WhatsApp or social media offering a Tesco job without an application or interview.
No genuine Tesco recruiter will ask you to pay for training, uniforms or background checks. If you are unsure about an offer, check that the vacancy appears on the official job search before sharing any personal details.
