J Sainsbury plc says it has around 140,000 colleagues across the UK. At the end of February 2026 it ran 609 supermarkets and 885 convenience stores, plus 201 standalone Argos stores and 466 Argos stores inside Sainsbury’s. The most common entry-level roles are customer assistants, Argos customer advisors, delivery drivers and warehouse operatives.

Why Sainsbury’s jobs are worth considering in 2026

Sainsbury’s raised pay for hourly colleagues by 5% from March 2026, to £13.23 an hour nationally and £14.54 in London. The company said in January 2026 that this was worth over £1,200 a year for a full-time hourly colleague and that pay had risen by 42% over five years.

The business is also opening stores. Its 2026 annual report says it opened 10 new supermarkets and 33 convenience stores in 2025/26 and expects around 10 supermarkets and around 20 convenience stores in 2026/27.

The most common Sainsbury’s and Argos roles

These are the entry-level roles that appear most often on sainsburys.jobs. Each advert lists the store, hours and shift pattern.

Requirements and minimum age

Sainsbury’s asks applicants to be of school leaving age, which varies across the UK, and some roles require you to be 18 or over. Store-based colleague roles do not need a CV, while retail management and head office roles do.

How to apply for Sainsbury’s jobs step by step

Sainsbury’s sets out an eight-stage process on its application help page. For store roles it usually looks like this.

  1. Search sainsburys.jobs by town or postcode and open the role that suits you.
  2. Read the role details, then click apply and enter your essential information.
  3. Upload documents only if the advert asks for them, since store roles do not need a CV.
  4. Complete any online assessment you are sent, such as a situational judgement test.
  5. Wait for an email or text telling you whether you have progressed.
  6. Use the online link to book your interview for store, depot or fulfilment roles.

The selection process and timings

Interviews for store, depot and fulfilment roles are competency based, and afterwards Sainsbury’s tells you how it went and what happens next. If you are successful, the contract is sent by email for you to accept. Some corporate roles add a second interview or a presentation.

For driver roles, the interview includes an online driving risk assessment, and successful candidates take a driving assessment when they join. Sainsbury’s says most retail applicants hear back within two to four weeks.

Sainsbury’s pay in 2026

The figures below are the hourly ranges Sainsbury’s published on 5 October 2026 for its Christmas roles; the in-store range matches the rates introduced in March 2026. The exact rate depends on location and role.

Role type Hourly pay published by Sainsbury’s
In-store roles £13.23 to £14.54
Argos drivers £14.23 to £15.54
Sainsbury’s drivers £14.73 to £16.04

Benefits for Sainsbury’s colleagues

Colleagues get a 10% discount at Sainsbury’s, Argos, Tu and Habitat for themselves and a nominated second user, rising to 15% at Sainsbury’s every Friday and Saturday. Sainsbury’s also offers free food during shifts, a pension scheme it pays into, life cover and a share save scheme.

Job adverts list further benefits, including a 24/7 employee assistance programme, cycle to work, interest-free season ticket loans and enhanced family leave. Benefits can differ between permanent and temporary contracts, so check the advert.

Christmas jobs at Sainsbury’s and Argos

The 17,500 Christmas roles for 2026 are spread across supermarkets, convenience stores, warehouses, Argos stores and online fulfilment, including delivery. Sainsbury’s says you can apply through the Christmas page on sainsburys.jobs or ask at your local store.

According to the same announcement, Christmas colleagues get free food during shifts and the uncapped colleague discount, and pay ranges from £13.23 to £16.04 an hour depending on the role and location. Contracts are fixed term, so check the start and end dates in each advert before you apply.

Where Sainsbury’s is hiring

With nearly 1,500 Sainsbury’s stores and more than 650 Argos stores, many of them inside supermarkets, vacancies come up in most parts of the UK, in town centres, retail parks and local high streets. Delivery driver roles are linked to stores with online grocery services, such as the Fulham Wharf store in London, which was advertising for drivers in October 2026.

CV and interview tips

For roles that do ask for a CV, Sainsbury’s suggests tailoring it so it shows how you meet each essential criterion in the advert. Keep it short and put your availability where it is easy to find.

Because interviews are competency based, prepare two or three examples of serving customers, working in a team and staying calm when it was busy. Explain what you did and what the result was.

If you apply to drive, be ready for the online driving risk assessment and expect a practical assessment after you join. Sainsbury’s adverts mention that its vans have in-cab AI cameras that monitor driver behaviour, and that drivers move containers of up to 15kg to the doorstep.

Common mistakes when applying

Common mistakes include trying to send a CV directly instead of applying through the site, applying for early or late shifts when you are under 18, and not having right to work documents ready. Some people also miss the interview booking link because they chose email updates and then did not check their inbox.

How to spot fake Sainsbury’s job offers

Sainsbury’s says all genuine vacancies are on sainsburys.jobs and that it never asks for payment at any stage, including for training or background checks. It does not request personal details or documents through social media or messaging apps.

Genuine emails come only from @sainsburys.co.uk, @myHR.sainsburys.co.uk, @sainsburys.com.hk or @nectar360.co.uk. Sainsbury’s advises reporting suspected recruitment fraud to Action Fraud.
